Uninsured vs. Underinsured Motorist Coverage

An upclose image of a man holding a cell phone with a vehicle in the background and the phone screen says car insurance on it According to the Oklahoma Insurance Department, 1 in 4 Oklahoma motorists are driving around without auto insurance. That’s a scary statistic, especially when you consider that you could get injured in a car accident caused by one of these motorists. How will you get your medical bills paid if they don’t have enough insurance coverage, or have none at all?

This is when you turn to your own uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance. You should check your policy now to see if you opted into it. If you turned down the coverage, now is a good time to update your policy to include it:

  • Uninsured motorist coverage protects you if you are hit and injured by a driver who doesn’t carry any auto insurance.
  • Underinsured motorist coverage protects you if you are hit and injured by a driver who carries insufficient insurance coverage given the severity of your injuries.

These types of policy coverage provide compensation for the medical expenses related to the injuries, or compensation for loss of life. It does not pay for vehicle damage or to replace the vehicle. You’d have to turn to your collision coverage for those purposes.

What are Your Options?

Our attorneys will perform a thorough review of your insurance policy to determine the possibilities. Oftentimes in these cases we are pursuing the maximum benefit from the accident victim’s policy. We know how to determine what is owed, and we also deal with bad faith insurance dealings, when the insurer is denying, delaying, or lowballing insurance benefits provided to the accident victim.

When faced with a situation in which the other driver doesn’t have adequate insurance, you may feel inclined to simply accept whatever is offered; however, we encourage you to contact us to make sure any settlement you’ve been offered is fair. You may be due certain benefits under your policy, and we can help you make that determination.
